There’s something about chickens that just brings a sense of peace to the day. Maybe it’s their quirky little personalities, the way they sprint across the yard like tiny velociraptors, or how they scratch at the dirt with such determination, completely unaware of anything beyond their next snack. Or maybe it’s the satisfaction of collecting fresh eggs, still warm from the nest, a tangible reward for the simple act of caring for these amazing birds.

For me, chickens are more than just egg producers, they’re therapy, entertainment, and a little piece of the good life, all wrapped up in a feathery package. And if you’ve ever thought about raising chickens but weren’t sure if it was worth it, let me be the one to tell you: If you can have chickens, you should have chickens.
The Calm in the Chaos
Life gets chaotic. Whether it’s juggling a business, keeping up with family life, or managing all the little homesteading projects I’ve taken on (because why have just one?), the days can feel like a blur. But no matter how hectic things get, stepping outside and seeing my flock instantly resets the mood.
Chickens have this incredible way of grounding you. They don’t care about deadlines or to-do lists. They live fully in the moment, pecking, exploring, and occasionally staring at you like you might have something better to offer them than what’s already in their feeder. Their routine becomes part of your own, a simple structure to the day that reminds you to pause, breathe, and enjoy the small moments.

If you think chickens are just brainless farm animals, you’re missing out on one of the best parts of keeping them. Every chicken has its own quirks and mannerisms. Then there are the drama queens, the troublemakers, and the ones who think they’re the boss, even when they’re definitely not.
Take my rooster, Bawk Obama, an absolute leader, but also, on occasion, a total goofball. Or my hen Eggreatha, who struts around like she owns the place. And then there are the chicks, the little puffballs who stumble over their own feet and follow their mothers with unwavering trust. Watching them interact, figuring out their pecking order, or even just taking a dust bath in the sun, it’s endlessly entertaining.
Fresh Eggs, Better Than Store-Bought
Okay, let’s talk eggs, because if there’s one thing that makes raising chickens a no-brainer, it’s the difference between farm-fresh eggs and the pale, sad, store-bought ones. The rich, golden yolks. The variety of shell colors. The fact that you know exactly where your eggs are coming from. There’s nothing quite like cracking open an egg that was laid just hours ago, it somehow tastes better, fresher, and more rewarding.
Selling eggs has even turned into a little side hustle for me, and I love sharing that experience with others. It’s hard to be in a bad mood when you’re watching a fluffy hen waddle toward you like you’re the best thing she’s seen all day.

Studies have shown that interacting with animals, including chickens, can lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and increase serotonin and dopamine, the chemicals responsible for happiness and relaxation. Backyard chickens also provide structure and routine, which is beneficial for mental well-being. Plus, the simple act of caring for another living thing fosters a sense of purpose and fulfillment. In short: chickens make you happy, and there’s proof to back it up.

I truly believe that anyone who has the space and ability to keep chickens should give it a try. They’re low-maintenance, endlessly amusing, and they provide food, natural pest control, and even fertilizer for the garden. But beyond the practical benefits, they add something special to life, a sense of connection, routine, and appreciation for the little joys of each day.
